7 embarrassing
•• Embarrass make to feel awkward or ashamed; cause mental discomfort or anxiety to (A.S. Hornby).
•• 1. Public disclosure of murky events, however embarrassing, is essential (Tony Barber). - Совершенно необходимо, чтобы общество получало информацию, пусть даже самую неприятную, о разного рода «темных делах»;
•• 2. After sacking virtually every liberal remaining in the cabinet, announcing the budgetary decrees that promise an end to the policy of fiscal austerity and crushing a terrorist attack in Dagestan with an embarrassing show of brutality, Yeltsin could hardly feel certain of Washington’s reaction (Moscow Times). – Уволив практически всех еще остававшихся в правительстве либералов, издав несовместимые с политикой жесткой экономии указы по бюджетным вопросам и подавив с вызывающей жестокостью террористическое нападение в Дагестане, Ельцин уже вряд ли может быть уверен в том, какой будет реакция Вашингтона;
•• 3. Even now, Condé Nast’s profit margins are embarrassingly small (Fortune). – Прибыльность Конде Наст и сейчас остается неприлично низкой;
•• 4. The CIA’s Directorate of Operations... has drawn criticism and punishment for past failures, including the cases of confessed spy Aldrich Ames and embarrassing operations in Guatemala and France (Washington Post). – Оперативное Управление ЦРУ подверглось критике и было наказано за имевшие место провалы, в том числе в историях с признавшимся в шпионаже Олдриче Эймсе и со скандальными операциями в Гватемале и Франции;
•• 5. Take the embarrassing circumstances of Mrs. Albright’s address last Friday on Palestinian state radio, which was voiced over by an interpretation of uncertain quality (Wall Street Journal). – Вспомним, каким конфузом обернулось выступление г-жи Олбрайт по палестинскому государственному радио: его синхронный перевод был сомнительного качества;
Clinton’s being dragged through plenty right now... To have your personal life put on display like that is embarrassing.

11 Psychological Testing
The clinical testing situation has a complex psychological structure. It is not an impersonal getting-together of two people in order that one, with the help of a little "rapport," may obtain some "objective" test responses from the other. The [disturbed]... patient is in some acute or chronic life crisis. He cannot but bring many hopes, fears, assumptions, demands and expectations into the test situation. He cannot but respond intensely to certain real as well as fantasied attributes of that situation. Being human and having to make a living-facts often ignored-the tester too brings hopes, fears, assumptions, demands and expectations into the test situation. She too responds personally and often intensely to what goes on-in reality and in fantasy-in that situation, however well she may conceal her personal response from the patient, from herself, and from her colleagues. -

19 change management
Gen Mgtthe coordination of a structured period of transition from situation A to situation B in order to achieve lasting change within an organization. Change management can be of varying scope, from continuous improvement, which involves small ongoing changes to existing processes, to radical and substantial change involving organizational strategy. Change management can be reactive or proactive. It can be instigated in reaction to something in an organization’s external environment, for example, in the realms of economics, politics, legislation, or competition, or in reaction to something within the processes, structures, people, and events of the organization’s internal environment. It may also be instigated as a proactive measure, for example, in anticipation of unfavorable economic conditions in the future. Change management usually follows five steps: recognition of a trigger indicating that change is needed; clarification of the end point, or “where we want to be”; planning how to achieve the change; accomplishment of the transition; and maintenance to ensure the change is lasting. Effective change management involves alterations on a personal level, for example, a shift in attitudes or work routines, and thus personnel management skills such as motivation are vital to successful change. Other important influences on the success of change management include leadership style, communication, and a unified positive attitude to the change among the workforce. Business process reengineering is one type of change management, involving the redesign of processes within an organization to raise performance. Change agents are those people within an organization who are leaders and champions of the change process. With the accelerating pace of change in the business environment in the 1990s and 2000s, change has become accepted as a fact of business life and is the subject of books on management. -
